The difficult or inconsistent or irregular bowel movement for substantial duration is called constipation, healthy habits and simple remedies can provide effective and permanent treatment to the problem. Skipping a bowel movement occasionally is not constipation or neither is lack of daily bowel movement, as long as the passing of feces is not difficult and straining and feces are not hard. Frequency of bowel movements is determined by digestion whereas constipation is determined in the colon which is responsible for eliminating stool.
There are many factors which are responsible for initiating constipation and to get effective and permanent treatment one should pay attention to all the triggers to identify the real cause of the problem. Diet, lack of exercise, medicines, lifestyle, eating habits, sleeping habits, stress, mixed or contradictory foods, suppressing the urge for bowel movement, irritable bowel syndrome and diseases are few factors which can promote constipation. Other health related issues like flatulence, indigestion, and acidity can also aggravate the problem.
There are many simple remedies which can cure the problem caused due to any of the above reasons, constipation caused due to medicines can be cured by changing the troubling medicine on doctor’s advice and constipation occurring due to any problem or disease can subside along with the major problem. Use of ginger in the diet or as an ingredient in the tea or salad can help in curing various stomach related issues including constipation very effectively.
Consuming 6-8 raisins every day after boiling, crushing and straining also helps immensely in smooth bowel movement. Consuming a teaspoon of honey with lukewarm water on an empty stomach in the morning is another old remedy to effectively alleviate constipation and this can be taken on regular basis to get permanent cure. Mild massage of lukewarm mustard oil before going to bed around naval also helps in smooth bowel movement.
Amongst fruits bael fruit provides one of the finest remedies for constipation, it is believed that regular use of this fruit can flush out the oldest accumulated fecal matter in the excretory system. Minimum 60 gm of fruit in the raw form shall be consumed before dinner on regular basis for an effective and permanent cure of constipation. All other fruits except banana and jack fruit also help in smoothening bowel movement.
Adequate water consumption, physical movement, exercises and avoiding strong tea, coffee and alcohol are good supportive habits for treating constipation. Spicy and fried foods and foods intolerable to the digestive system shall also be strictly avoided for quick relief.
